The GMT-Master II was originally designed by Rolex to show the time in two different time zones simultaneously during intercontinental flights. Thanks to an ingenious mechanism operated via the winding crown the wearers’ local time are easily set by “jumping” from hour to hour, the hour hand can be adjusted forwards or backwards independently of the minute and seconds hands. This allows travellers to quickly change to their new time zone without the need to adjust the timekeeping of the watch and switch back to the original time whenever and as often as required.

The distinctively coloured 24-hour hand displays the “home” reference time in a first time zone which can be read on the graduations on the bezel.
